NHL.COM STAFF PICKS
David Satriano: Red Wings for a potential victory (vs. SEA)
The Detroit Red Wings are 5-1-0, averaging the most goals per game (5.0) in the NHL and have the two best points in the League in forwards Alex DeBrincat (12 ) and Dylan Larkin (11). Their goalkeepers don’t have to be great, just good enough – and they have been. Ville Husso (3-1-0, 3.04 GAA, .901 save percentage) could take over James Reimer (2-0-0, 1.00 GAA, .963 save percentage, a shutout), but either could have the hot hand for a victory against the Kraken. Seattle has struggled offensively with 11 goals in six games this season, and its 1.83 goals per game ranks only ahead of the San Jose Sharks (1.40) and Washington Capitals (1.25) for the least of the NHL.
Pete Jensen: Maple Leafs for fewest goals allowed (at WSH)
The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday after rookie goaltender Joseph Woll relieved Ilya Samsonov and stopped all 28 shots received. Woll is 10-3-0 with a .928 save percentage and one shutout in 13 career regular season games and also had a .915 SV% in four playoff games, making of him a viable starter against the Washington Capitals. If Samsonov were to make an appearance, he would face his former team; he was 2-1-0 against the Capitals last season and, despite a slow start this season, has 29 wins in 46 games with a .913 save percentage and four shutouts over the last two seasons combined . The Capitals are averaging the fewest goals allowed per game (1.25) this season.
Anna Dua: New York Islanders for most saves (vs. COL)
The Colorado Avalanche rank second in the NHL in shots on goal per game this season (37.2), indicating likely New York Islanders starter Ilya Sorokin could be busy early and often. He is 2-0-1 with a .914 save percentage in three starts this season and ranked second in the league in save percentage (.924; minimum 40 games) last season . Sorokin has never posted a save percentage below .918 in any of his first three NHL seasons, so he has the potential for high save volume in this matchup against the dynamic offense of the Avalanche. Last season, Sorokin posted a 46-save shutout in his only game against Colorado.
