Edmonton Oilers goalie Alex Stalock is he will likely miss the entire next NHL season because of heart disease.
Stalock, who contracted COVID-19 before the shortened 2021 campaign, has consulted with several cardiologists and is currently seeking additional medical opinions, according to Oilers general manager Ken Holland.
Holland spoke to the media on Wednesday during the opening day of Oilers training camp and said this particular condition may have been detected by doctors late last season when Stalock returned home him for additional testing after the team’s end-of-year physicals.
After contracting the coronavirus last November, Stalock revealed to The Athletic that he was later diagnosed with myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle that can lead to cardiac arrest. Doctors reportedly told him to rest for six weeks before seeing a specialist in Boston who gave the goalie the green light to start training and skating again.
Stalock spent time on Edmonton’s taxi squad after the team claimed him off waivers from Minnesota in March, but, ultimately, Stalock did not appear in any games last season, nor with the Oilers nor with the Wild.
The 34-year-old spent time with the Sharks, Leafs, Wild and Oilers organizations, amassing a 61-49-18 record, a 2.61 goals-against average and a save percentage of .909 in 151 career NHL games.
