A few weeks ago we asked you, the fans, what you would expect from the NHL post-lockout to help you get back to playing after an extended work stoppage.
One commentator said “don’t expect a cent out of my pocket. I won’t attend any games this season even if someone offers free tickets”.
Then there is this report from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: he interviewed Bill O’Toole, a Flyers season ticket holder who wants to boycott Philadelphia’s first home game.
“It would be a national story and the appropriate ‘final word’ on the debacle from the fans, the ones writing the checks for the billions of dollars the two sides can’t seem to share,” O’Toole said.
This is not the first time that such an idea has been floated. John MacKinnon of the Edmonton Journal suggested that NHL fans shouldn’t even protest — they should just leave, even though he said they wouldn’t, as history has shown.
Luke DeCock of the News & Observer wrote about Carolina Hurricanes fans seeking refunds on their draft tickets, an action others may take with NHL teams.
The real long-term damage could be done by casual fans, tired of multiple work stoppages who are already gone for good.
We would like to know if you plan to boycott when the NHL resumes. Have you already received a refund on your subscriptions or are you considering requesting one? Do you know anyone who is considering leaving the NHL? Tell us in the comments section below.
