Tage Thompson had the fastest shot rate on a goal in the NHL this season for the Buffalo Sabers in a 4-3 shootout win over the Washington Capitals at KeyBank Center on Monday.
According to NHL EDGE statistics, this was the hardest shot on a goal in the EDGE tracking era (since 2021-22).
The forward’s goal at 12:49 of the second period clocked 103.7 mph, outpacing the New York Islanders defenseman. Ryan Pulockwho scored on a 101.34 mph shot in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on December 15. Thompson buried a one-timer blocker from the left faceoff circle while on the power play to tie the game 2-2. It was one of two shot attempts by Thompson over 100 mph Monday.
Thompson’s goal comes just six days after he achieved the highest shot velocity in an NHL game in four seasons of NHL EDGE statistical data. He attempted to hit 106.0 mph during the third period of a 4–2 loss to the Dallas Stars on December 31.
That shot surpassed Thompson’s previous NHL attempt of 104.69 mph, which he set against the Detroit Red Wings on October 26, 2024. At the time, it eclipsed Utah Hockey Club defenseman Michael Kesselring’s league-best mark of 103.77 mph from October 24.
According to NHL EDGE stats, Thompson is the only forward in the league with a shot over 100 mph this season after making his third and fourth such attempts on Monday. The only other player with multiple shots over 100 mph this season is Pulock (three). Thompson also leads NHL forwards in shots over 90 mph this season with 23, nine more than the closest player at the position (Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is second with 14).
Thompson, who ranks 14th in the NHL in goals (19 in 36 games), is tied for eighth in mid-zone goals (eight) and fourth among forwards in long-range shots on goal (22).
