With the NFL trade deadline fast approaching, Jerry Jones talked a lot Tuesday regarding the Dallas Cowboys’ potential involvement.
When first asked during his weekly radio interview about the likelihood of the Cowboys making any moves, Jones tempered expectations.
“It will have to come to us,” he said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “I don’t want to rule it out in any way, but it still does.”
Jones then explained that getting a deal done at this time of year “primarily has to start at the other end.”
“It doesn’t show a lack of aggressiveness,” he added, “that’s just where it starts. I like where we are with our staff today. I don’t think in any way that we need to improve our roster.
But in true Jones fashion, a later response in the same interview on a similar topic resulted in a response that sounded a little different.
“I would really like to improve our team right now, so that gives you an idea,” he said. “Because I think we have a team that is competitive. Would I do something that would take away the importance of this team so that they can help us in the future? Maybe not.
Jones was basically saying he would like to add to the roster and is less likely to give up a current player in exchange for future draft picks.
Given the Cowboys’ roster and where they stand after seven weeks (4-2), it would make perfect sense to add to the current group in some areas of need. And given the NFC opener and the fact that 27 years have passed since the Cowboys made the Super Bowl, it would make perfect sense to be even riskier to add something now that could place at the top in January.
While it’s still more likely a Hankins-type move than a Cooper-type move, for this story we’re focusing on the biggest names. We’re talking about the type of player who could make the Cowboys look back in January and say, “That helped us get to the top.” »
