Of the many Patriots players who have been most commonly talked about as trade candidates as the deadline approaches, one name that has come up more than once, surprisingly (and unsurprisingly), is Mac Jones.
Given his performance this season and the decline in his prowess that seems to have started last year, many fans and media members believe it would be better for Bill Belichick. to explore the quarterback market and send Jones to the league to see who might be interested.
To some extent this makes sense because he hasn’t played well and in some cases that’s the reason they lost some games. But even with that in mind, the Patriots don’t have a better option waiting in the wings, making it foolish to deal Jones midseason unless they truly go into full tank mode.
If that’s the case, particularly if Belichick and Robert Kraft agree that Jones isn’t the franchise quarterback they hoped for, then NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky says it’s time to move on from Jones. as soon as possible.
While appearing on WEEI’s “Jones and Mego” earlier this week, the former quarterback, who has been a staunch defender of Jones over the years, was asked whether the Patriots should discuss of the quarterback trade this season. Considering his usual position, his answer speaks volumes about Jones’ current position on the team.
“Should they think about it? The answer to that question is yes, if they’ve made the decision, they’re done with Mac. And when I say that, it’s Mr. Kraft. And then it’s Bill Belichick .
Now these two guys have to be together thinking they’ll be together next year. And I know it’s become a topic of conversation: Will Coach Belichick be there? Is Mr. Kraft going to do anything? Obviously, the years of disappointment over the last three.
So if these two guys say, “We’re done with Mac Jones, we’re definitely doing something else.” » So the answer to this question is undoubtedly yes. »
He makes a great point about Belichick and Kraft we have to decide togetherwhich has been one of the most debated arguments since the start of the 2023 season. This will likely continue if the Patriots continue to lose, and the organization must decide what is best for the team moving forward.
The problem, however, is that there isn’t much time left before the deadline to provide enough time to make such an important decision. This may not be a difficult choice for some due to Jones’ poor play. But as has been said, Tom Brady isn’t walking in the door to save the team.
Malik Cunningham, Will Grier and Bailey Zappe probably aren’t much better than what they’re getting from Jones, which seems like a relatively easy decision to veto any trade possibility for Jones.
Maybe it’s an idea they’ll explore next season or in the offseason, but it all depends on how they hope the season ends: better than it started or staying on pace so to obtain a better position in the draft.
