New Canaan residents and city stakeholders can provide feedback on the city’s 10-year conservation and development plan twice before the end of the year, on November 28 and December 14.
On November 28, the themes will be municipal infrastructure and educational services. Housing and the city center will be the themes of the discussion on December 14. The meetings will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held in the municipal meeting room at city hall.
The community dialogue events are the third phase of the city’s POCD subcommittee’s work to gather public opinions and suggestions on a wide range of topics related to New Canaan’s future, housing and economic development to parks and open spaces.
New Canaan updates its conservation and development plan, which the state requires of all municipalities every 10 years. The planning document aims to guide growth and development and identify strategies to protect resources and attributes. The plan paves the way for many initiatives the city could undertake.

Cook safely this holiday
The New Canaan Fire Marshal’s Office and the New Canaan Fire Department remind residents that the greatest number of home kitchen fires occur on Thanksgiving, with unattended cooking being by far the largest contributor.
They recommend these tips:
- Stay in the kitchen while you cook
- Keep children away from the stove, hot foods and liquids, and electric knives.
- Make sure electrical cords are not hanging off the counter or within reach of children.
- Make sure smoke detectors work
- If frying turkey, don’t overfill the fryers. Always use turkey fryers outdoors on a flat surface, away from buildings and flammable materials; have a tight-fitting lid in case the oil catches fire; do not leave unattended; wear long sleeves and safety glasses to protect yourself from splashes, and keep children and pets away, as the oil can remain hot for hours. The turkey must be completely thawed before putting it in the fryer.
