Netflix Gets Into Live Sports With Golf, The Slowest Sport Ever

Netflix Cup still on display.
Netflix

When it first emerged as a streaming giant, Netflix relied primarily on a mix of scripted Netflix series and reality shows. In the decade since, this formula has continued to work incredibly well for the streamer and kept it as one of the most dominant players, even as new competitors emerged. Today, as more and more people abandon cable, Netflix is increasingly experimenting with a format that was anathema from its conception: live TV. In addition to award ceremonies and special reunions, Netflix is also getting into live sportsand it starts with what might just be the most boring live sport ever.

If you’re wondering what to watch on Netflix, the answer may now be golf. The streaming service recently announced that it would host a live tournament between the stars of two of its recent hit series: Formula 1: Drive to Survive And At his best. F1 drivers from Drive to survive everyone will team up with a golfer from At his best to compete in an eight-hole match-play tournament at Wynn Golf Club at Wynn Las Vegas. The event, which is called The Netflix Cutis scheduled to take place on November 14 at 3:00 p.m. PT, 6:00 p.m. ET and will stream live on Netflix.

Netflix has already announced the athletes who will also participate in the event:

  • F1 drivers: Alex Albon (Williams Racing), Pierre Gasly (BWT Alpine F1 Team), Lando Norris (McLaren Racing) and Carlos Sainz (Scuderia Ferrari)
  • PGA TOUR golfers: Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas

The match will consist of four teams, with a driver and a golfer on each team. The tournament will see the bottom two teams advance to the final eight holes of the tournament to see who will win the inaugural Netflix Cup title.

Live events are still quite unusual for Netflix, but the streamer is certainly trying to make them more frequent. One of his very first live events, a reunion special for his reality show Love is blind, was a fairly high-profile disaster, plagued by technical problems so severe that it was actually impossible to watch the event live. Netflix clearly believes it has put the infrastructure in place in the months since this debacle to ensure this one goes more smoothly.

As the Love is blind reunion, this live-action special is designed to capitalize on the success of several existing Netflix properties. At his best is a new series that premiered this year, and Netflix claims to have increased interest in the PGA Tour. The series has just finished filming its second season. Drive to survivemeanwhile, was an even earlier entry into Netflix’s sport and enters its sixth season as F1 becomes increasingly popular in the United States. Assuming the event isn’t riddled with technical issues or delays, it has the potential to be a solid redemption for This is Netflix’s latest major attempt at live streaming and will help prove that Live events can be part of every Netflix account.
