World number one Nelly Korda joined host Gary Williams on Monday as the first guest on Golf Channel’s new morning show, 5 Clubs. Williams, a longtime Golf Channel personality, launched 5 Clubs and its podcast in 2021. At the end of his segment, Korda jokingly told Williams that it’s all downhill from here, a nod to his status in the game.
The former “Morning Drive” host interviewed Korda remotely from his studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, while Korda was in Bradenton, Florida, fresh off a vacation in Park City, Utah.
“When you go to a place where there’s a lot of snow and you wear a lot of down jackets and a beanie, not many people recognize you,” Korda said, “so it was the perfect time to recharge my batteries. and do something I don’t normally do.
During the interview – in which Korda revealed that the first autograph she received as a child was from Arnold Palmer – the LPGA star reflected on the highs of her historic seven-win season in 2024 as well as the lows, like the shocking. missed cuts at the US Women’s Open and the KPMG Women’s PGA.
“Those high-pressure moments where you’re in conflict, they take so much out of you,” Korda said, “that, you know, it was really important for me to recharge, and I’m not going to lie and say I knew what I was doing.
“I mean, in the middle of the year where I had, let’s say, the KPMG US Open and just like a few other regular events, I was really struggling. I didn’t have a lot of energy…my mind wasn’t connecting to my body, and I think I was just a little too tired and obviously the negative energy and not playing well took a toll on me. little exhausted. . But it was a great learning opportunity for me and made me realize that the people around me are the most important people and I’m so grateful and I’m so lucky for these people, and it was a great way to lean on others. , Also.”
Williams opened the show by explaining the background to everything from the show’s introductory music to the paintings on the walls, including the iconic National Golf Links windmill and the Shinnecock Hills clubhouse.
“It’s not about the fact that I went to these places,” Williams said, “it’s about the time spent. Because the motto here on 5 Clubs is it’s the time not the score who matters. So what will we do on a daily basis? We’re going to talk about the golf industry, and it’s not just going to be me.
Williams’ show will air Monday through Wednesday at 8 a.m. on Golf Channel. He will be joined by a variety of analysts and guests as well as contributors from the 5 Club team, including former PGA Tour players and analysts Johnson Wagner and Brendan De Jonge, the college basketball commentator of ‘ESPN and golf enthusiast Jay Bilas, golf architect Gil Hanse, broadcaster and former college golfer Emma Carpenter, and Taylor Zarzour of SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.
