Dishes best prospect Luisangel Acuña was hot at the plate during the Venezuelan Winter League.
The speedy infielder helped Lara’s Cardenales secure their doubleheader sweep Friday by reaching base four times, stealing three bases, driving in three runs and scoring three runs of his own.
Acuña is now hitting .388 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, nine RBIs, nine stolen bases and an impressive .996 OPS through his first 17 Winter League games.
Most of his time on the field has been spent at shortstop, logging only one appearance in the field so far.
The youngster had an up-and-down campaign in the minors, but he performed admirably when called upon to make his much-anticipated big league debut in place of the injured player. Francisco Lindor throughout the section.
Acuña showed off his strong defense and game-breaking speed while hitting an impressive .308 with a triple, two doubles, three home runs and a .966 OPS in 14 games.
While he has certainly made a positive impression, it remains to be seen what type of role he will play this season in a crowded Mets infield with even more young talent on the way.
“Anytime you can make a good impression at the major league level, it’s a good thing,” David Stearns said during the CEO meetings. “He obviously played at a very important time in the season for us. We also understand that it was only a few weeks, and I think we have some great performance history on all of these guys to fall back on.”
