Mets’ Francisco Alvarez available off bench after leaving Friday’s game with back spasms

Francisco Alvarez is out of the Dishes‘ starting lineup for Saturday night’s crucial game against the Milwaukee Brewers, but Carlos Mendoza says the young backstop will be available off the bench.

Alvarez needed help from coaches to leave the field in the top of the seventh inning of Friday night’s game when he was in serious pain after sliding at third base.

He told reporters after the game that he was already feeling better, but that the team was going to wait to see how things went before the game before deciding whether he would be in the lineup.

Catching a lead Hayden Senger joined the team in Milwaukee as an emergency catcher, but after completing his workout, the team deemed Alvarez ready to roll.

“It was quite scary yesterday,” said the skipper. “I was in the clubhouse when he arrived and it didn’t look great, but by the time we got out of the stadium he was in a much better position.

“When we came in today, it was the same thing. He’s doing all his pre-match activities doing batting practice, he’s already been swinging in the cages, so I think I’ll have a player here.”
