Melbourne will make the history of sport this weekend when he organizes the first NBA matches in Australia, in what is a Slam Dunk for the calendar of major events in the city.
The Landmark NBA X NBL Melbourne series takes place on Friday October 3 in Rod Laver Arena when the New Orleans of the NBA Pélicans will face Melbourne United, followed by a second confrontation against the south-east of Melbourne Phoenix on Sunday, October 5.
The Minister of Tourism, Sport and major events, Steve Dimopoulos has today joined Pelicans’ superstars to launch the series – which should attract visitors from all over Australia and abroad.
“The NBA X NBL series marks a new revolutionary chapter for basketball in Australia, and Victoria is proud to show the way again by bringing some of the best of local fans,” said Dimopoulos.
“This is a slam dunk for Victoria, with major events like these offering huge economic advantages in Melbourne, visitors also filming restaurants, cafes, hotels and shops.”
The NBA Hall of Famers, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, will be in Melbourne to celebrate the historic games and the fans will have the opportunity to hear the superstars during a Q&R on the field during the open session – with the legends to also appear during the fans of Saturday.
The two games will be broadcast live in more than 200 countries and territories on the NBA League Pass. At home, fans can see the games live on Channel 10 and Amazon Prime.
“Today’s announcement is the culmination of a long -term vision: the NBL working with the NBA and the Victorian government to bring the best basketball to our fans,” said the executive president of the NBL group Larry Kestelman.
“As these games are broadcast around the world, they will present the incredible dynamism of Victoria while inspiring the next generation.”

Australia now has more than a dozen active players currently on the NBA lists, and Melbourne is the only city in the modern NBA era to produce three number one recovery choices – Ben Simmons, Kyrie Irving and Andrew Bogut.
Melbourne is also now the only city in Australia to welcome the NBA, the National Hockey League (NNH) and next year, the National Football League (NFL) – three of the American professional sports leagues of “Big Four”.
