Max Homa has racked up some pretty impressive golf accomplishments during a PGA Tour career that includes six wins (and counting), even winning at a place where his idol, Tiger Woods, never done. But perhaps the sporting highlight of his life occurred on the basketball court more than a decade ago. Unfortunately, it was very short-lived.
Homa appeared on The Smylie Show from SiriusXM this week with Smylie Kaufman to discuss many topics, but one story involving a pickup game and a future NFL star stood out. Apparently the Cal golf team took on the Cal football team in hoops (probably not a fair fight!) and Homa had the tough task of guarding wide receiver Keenan Allen. This promises to be a (particularly) difficult match!
But Homa says he was doing pretty well and even managed to produce an incredible highlight, before things ended exactly as you might think. Getting dunked by another football player. Listen :
Classic. First of all, kudos to Max for reliving this traumatic experience. But also for this initial block!
Believe it or not, I once pinned a teammate on the backboard when I was a high schooler (I could jump higher than Phil Mickelson back then) and the shocking development stopped practice for a few minutes. I still don’t know how it happened, but it’s something I’ll never forget. And it wasn’t even against a future fantasy football legend. So good for Max.
But unfortunately for Max, his game didn’t stop with his epic block, but rather ended in embarrassing fashion. Rough. It’s still a beautiful story that Max will enjoy telling his son one day. He could just leave that last part out.
