Liverpool’s continuation on the title of Premier League struck an unexpected bump, with consecutive defeats for the first time in Arne Slot’s mandate. In the latest episode of Media Matters for Anfield Index, David Lynch and Dave Davis dissected the recent form of the team, the response of the fans, and what all this means for the title race.

Newcastle’s defeat raises questions

The final defeat of the Liverpool Carabao Cup against Newcastle has left many people by questioning performance, Lynch recognizing the contrast that struck in intensity between the two parties: “Newcastle wanted more.

He noted the physical battle in the midfield as a key problem, with Jelinton de Newcastle overlooking Liverpool field circles: “Jelinton almost sometimes pleged our midfielder, simply beaten them physically.”

Arne Slot’s selection decisions examined

Lynch has also thought about the tactical decisions of Arne Slot, in particular her choice to start Diogo Jota despite the difficulty of the attacker: “Jota does not obtain these chances. He has been looking at a court since this injury … But the location goes with him because he wants it to finish the prowess. “

He also questioned the lack of rotation, in particular given the list of congested elements of Liverpool: “It was an evaluation season, but the rotation enters the element next season? This is the question.”

Set-peak problems are continuing

One of the most worrying aspects of the loss of Liverpool was their difficulties of the sets, in particular by defending against Dan Burn of Newcastle: “Whenever Newcastle had a corner, they simply had them categorically scathing to the rear post … and Dan Burn will win this head.”

Lynch was surprised that Liverpool does not adjust: “As soon as you see it is tactics, it is madness for me that they did not just make a quick exchange.”

Despite Arne Slot’s explanations after the match, Lynch thought it was an avoidable problem: “You just can’t concede pieces and do nothing to change it.”

Title Perspective

Despite the negativity surrounding the defeats, Lynch was clear that Liverpool remains in control of their title of destiny: “It is absolutely confusing for me that people cannot think beyond the last two results … Liverpool will win the League.”

He has referred to the OPTA title model, which always gives Liverpool a 99% chance of raising the trophy, adding: “For Liverpool to throw it now, they should lose four games, and Arsenal should be perfect. These two things are extremely improbable.”

Davis has also examined the remaining devices, noting that the Liverpool calendar is favorable: “You can say that Fulham is delicate, but they are mid-table … Spurs will be focused on the Europa League. This is not a bad list of lighting, and we don’t even need to win them all. ”

Lynch summed up the situation with a last reminder of Liverpool’s achievements this season: “If someone had said at the start of the season that Liverpool would win the League, you would stop hand.”

With the time to reset during the international break, Liverpool still has the advantage in the title race. The key is now to regroup, refocus and ensure that the Premier League trophy returns to Anfield.
