Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has insisted there is “nothing new to say” regarding fresh speculation over his future.
Alonso has been heavily linked with the Liverpool job since Jurgen Klopp announced last month he would resign at the end of the campaign, but the Premier League club now face competition from Bayern Munich.
It was revealed on Wednesday that current Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will leave his post at the end of the season, increasing the scrutiny placed on Alonso.
The former Liverpool and Bayern midfielder enjoyed an excellent campaign in charge of Leverkusen, establishing an eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga and guiding them to the knockout stages of the Europa League before the visit of Mainz Friday.
Alonso faced the media on Thursday and began his press conference by ending speculation about his future.
“Maybe you have questions about my future, but I’m sorry, I don’t have anything new to say. I wanted to say it before,” he said during a press conference, via Bild.
“At the moment I’m the coach (of Leverkusen). That’s for sure. I don’t have anything new to say for the future. We’ll see. It’s normal that there are questions, but “It’s off topic now. This is not the time for me to talk about it much.”
Asked if Bayern had contacted him since Tuchel’s announcement, Alonso replied: “I understand the question, but I have to repeat that I have nothing new to say. It’s just hypothetical .”
The 42-year-old also insisted it had been a normal week for his team and claimed he is currently preparing to become Leverkusen manager next season given his contract runs until 2026 .
He said: “I suppose that’s the case at the moment.
“This week was normal. It was calm for us. We had three training sessions. That’s normal.
“I know it’s my goal, it’s my job, to succeed with the team. It’s my job. We’re in a very good situation right now. We want to continue like this. That’s enough for me. “
