How do you get Foxy Laura Ingraham to kick off her show for you? Author Steve Almond put on an amusing display Wednesday by using some of the network’s more unsavory practices to prove his football-related points.
And surprisingly, Ingraham left Almond, author of Against football: a supporter’s reluctant manifesto – getting away with a few slams before finally cutting him off.
First, on how to make football safer following news of Buffalo Bills guard Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest, Almond took Ingraham’s breath away when he suggested using economic incentives . “Like on Fox News, when you have hosts who sexually harass people,” he told the host, who assumed an expression of pure constipation rivaled only by Tucker Carlson. “Fox News is investing money to make this PR problem go away.”
“It’s a cute little gesture,” Ingraham said, struggling to keep her composure. (See first video below.)
Second, on the topic of football, politics and social justice: “I know you focus on the players, I focus on the fans, and what I essentially believe is not just a “Government ban will make football safer, and certainly not some mythical woke mob you mentioned trying to scare your viewers,” Almond said.
“I’m not trying to scare viewers,” Ingraham said.
“Oh, I think that’s your whole business model,” Almond retorted. “Your whole business model is to scare your viewers. That’s your whole role.” (See video here.)
For the third and final act, returning to their earlier discussion, Almond gave an example of how to manage PR to secure revenue: “A few years ago, when you taunted a survivor of the mass shooting in Parkland, you only apologized because the announcers pulled out of your show.”
Ingraham, finally catching his breath, had enough and cut his microphone. “Nice try, little buddy.” (See second video below.)
I would say it was more than just a try and more of a touchdown.
