Australian Nick Kyrgios won his first game since 2022 when he retaliated with a set to beat American Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Miami Open on Wednesday.
Kyrgios’ career has been destroyed by injuries in the past two years and had to withdraw from his first match at Indian Wells at the start of the month.
The 29 -year -old flamboyant man suffered from the pain in his right wrist rebuilt surgical – a procedure that left him on the sidelines for 18 months.
“It was a long trip, even to reach the start of the games and be afraid to finish them,” said Kyrgios.
“Going out and getting a victory and having the impression that I belong was special again,” added after the victory of an hour and 43 minutes.
Kyrgios, the Wimbledon 2022 finalist, was in the grip of injuries in his career, but it was the wrist that caused him the most serious problems and he said that he was deeply pessimistic about his return.
“I never thought I would play tennis again to be brutally honest with you. I had conversations with my camp and my team, and I said” I don’t know how long I can continue to do “”, he said.
“This (victory) puts gasoline in the tank but I need to be realistic and see how my wrist feels tomorrow because it is a grin here,” he added.
There was a victory in the first round for the 38 -year -old Gael Monfils French who became the second older man, after Jimmy Connors, to be won at the Miami Open.
The Monfils beat the quarter finalist of last year, Fabian Marozsan of Hungary, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
In the female draw, Emma Raducanu won her first victory, defeating the 19-year-old Joker Sayaka Ishii from Japan 6-2, 6-1 in just 65 minutes.
The US Open 2021 champion will face the eighth head of American Emma Navarro in the second round, her first meeting with a top 10 player since her loss against Iga Swiatek during the Australian Open third round.
“It will be an extremely difficult match,” said Raducanu in his interview on the field. “It is probably in better shape, so I can go out and express myself and try to compete for each point.”
The American Sofia Kenin won a battle of two former Grand Chelem champions when she beat the Czech Petra Kvitova 6-4, 7-5.
Kenin will now be a compatriot and the world number three Coco Gauff in the second round.
