Nick Kyrgios remains out of the Australian Open, with Priscilla Hon headlining the four locals who will receive wildcard spots for next month’s grand slam.

Monday’s announcement came a day after Kyrgios received a wildcard into the Brisbane International from January 4-11.

Kyrgios earns wildcard for Brisbane International

Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios receives wildcard into Brisbane International as he targets a return to the Australian Open.

But Kyrgios still has a chance as more Australian Open wildcards will be announced ahead of the main draw which begins on January 18.

Kyrgios, plagued by injuries and four rounds of knee and wrist surgeries, has played just six ATP Tour matches in more than three years.

The wildcards were awarded to Hon, Rinky Hijikata, Talia Gibson and Taylah Preston.

Hon, 27, reached the third round of a grand slam for the first time this year, beating 17th seed Liudmila Samsonova at the US Open, after winning three qualifying matches just to advance to the main draw.

Its ranking also reached the top 100 for the first time, climbing as high as 94 in October before ending the year at 119.

Hon also qualified for Wimbledon and reached the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, while winning the ITF W75 tournaments in Brisbane and Romania.

Sabalenka calls Kyrgios match ‘win-win’

Aryna Sabalenka is adamant her upcoming clash against Nick Kyrgios will not be a gimmick that could harm women’s tennis.

She was nominated for Tennis Australia’s Newcombe Medal, won by Alex de Minaur.

“I pushed my body really hard to try to avoid needing it (a wildcard), but I’m very grateful,” Hon said.

“I’m proud to represent Australia and I can’t wait to see how far I can go.”

The highlight of Hijikata’s 2025 season came in doubles, when he reached the Wimbledon final with Dutch partner David Pel.

This will be her fourth consecutive Australian Open in the singles main draw.

Kyrgios gets wildcard boost for Kooyong

Nick Kyrgios’ Australian Open wildcard campaign is underway in earnest after the former Wimbledon finalist was announced on the Kooyong Classic exhibition court.

Preston have won 31 of their last 37 games this year, dropping their ranking from 259 to 199.

Gibson was selected for Australia’s Billie Jean Cup team for the first time this year and her ranking reached 105 in August.

She won her first Grand Slam main draw match at this year’s Australian Open.

French Tiansoa players Sarah Rakotomanga Rajaonah and Kyrian Jacquet also have wildcard entries.

Australia now has eight men and eight women in the Open singles draws.
