The 49ers have suffered so many injuries over the course of the season that it’s easy to forget that they’ve also been without a key player since February.
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw tore his Achilles tendon during the Super Bowl and head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on his long recovery during the Super Bowl. an apparition on KNBR Tuesday. Shanahan didn’t have an exact date for when Greenlaw might return to the field, but he hinted it wouldn’t be too long.
“I think Dre gets closer” Shanahan said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “I don’t want to put a timetable on it. I’d probably be surprised (if it were) right after the bye week, but I think after that it’ll be almost week-to-week, which means if all goes well it’ll be a sooner week than the following week, whatever the diagnosis.”
Getting Greenlaw back won’t be exactly the same as extending the trade deadline because he won’t have the same need to acclimate to a new situation, but it could have the same kind of impact on the 49ers in the second half . of the season.
