Next week, Keegan Bradley will not be launched Bethpage Black. In fact, Bradley will be one of the most popular figures on site because he will direct the American team against Europeans in the 45th game of the Ryder Cup.
But almost two decades ago, Bradley was just a college kid trying to sneak in the TEE hours on one of the best and most famous public journeys in golf.
Bradley, Golf magazine’s last cover starRecently sat down to talk about his journey to Bethpage, and that included looking at his collegial golf days in St. John’s nearby and sneaking in Tee Times on the black course.
Black is closed on Monday for the interview, but at the time, Bradley and some of his teammates – with a little help from the Superintendent at the time – sneaned on 13 holes through Round Swamp Road.
“The inner loop, you are on the other side of the road, so no one can see you when you are there,” said Bradley. “And when you cross the road from 14 to 15 years old, you are on the other side where the clubhouse is and people can see you everywhere. So, we somehow played the inner loop so that no one saw you because the course was closed; I’m sure you were not supposed to do it. It was so horrible not to go there and play these (other) holes.
“Finally my last year, my boyfriend George and I, we went and played and we had so many problems. It was really bad. It’s as crazy as I never saw my trainer. Finally my last year, we said to ourselves, the cum, we have to go do it – and it was ugly. ”
A police officer was even called to the site to examine the golfer report who sneaned on the route. Bradley calls him a “huge error” now, but he says that there is just something about Bethpage Black which is too tempting to ignore.
“People do not realize, if you are not from New York, how important Bethpage is important for the locals,” he said. “The winged foot is great, Shinnecock is incredible, but if you speak to a real New York, Bethpage is the home journey.”
