Think about a movie. John Williams probably wrote the score.
The creeping tension in “Jaws”, the lyrical flight of “Harry Potter”, the entire “Star Wars” saga… it’s all Williams.
But for all his accolades, accomplishments and aural genius, Williams will have his work cut out for him writing ESPN’s new theme for Monday’s TCU-Georgia national championship game. Entitled βOf courage and gloryβ (Yes of course), Williams try to transmit βthe feeling behind the night, the fear and anticipation, the triumph and failure.β Variety called it βa joyful opener, opening with fanfares and moving smoothly from martial urgency to anthemic splendor,β and isnβt that what itβs all about?
He’s not just a piano guy. It took a 96-piece orchestra on Sony’s stage to get it perfect, and it’s apparently ESPN’s largest music commission.
This isn’t Williams’ first foray into football as he created the majestic theme for Sunday Night Football. Here it is, because, to be honest, it’s fantastic and I want to hear it again.
The new score will be heard throughout ESPN’s coverage of the College Football Playoff finale on Monday, with “cutdowns and stingers” to be played throughout the game. It won’t just be an opening. That’s it.
We can’t wait to hear what he’s built for TCU and Georgia. In fact, you probably don’t even need to watch the game. Listen.
