Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. receives praise for his potential from his father, former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter Sr.
Like father, like son. Rookie cornerback Joey Porter Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps by playing football and now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers defense after Joey Porter Sr. did so as a linebacker for the Steelers from 2009 to 2006.
However, Porter Sr. believes that his son has a great chance to surpass his career accomplishments, which include a Super Bowl ring, two first-team All-Pro nominations and making the 2000s All-Decade team.
“He certainly has the potential to be a bigger NFL star than me. That was the goal,” said Porter Sr. “He was ready for the opportunity to play football, which he fell in love with very early once he committed to it,” said Porter Sr . “(As a father), whatever he starts in life, you want to participate in it like I do with all my children. I tried to make them better than me, no matter what,” via WPXI.
“He always preached, he wanted me to be better than him,” Porter Jr. added. “It was always a topic of our conversation when we played sports. He always gave me the greatest confidence there. And he made me want to wear my last name proudly.
Joey Porter Jr. took a big step toward becoming that kind of player when he started his first match last weekend against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Levi Wallace was injured. After the game, coach Mike Tomlin announced that Porter Jr. would retain his starting spot.
