On Friday, ABC11 spoke with ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas about recent reports regarding the NCAA basketball investigation.
Bilas discussed the differences between current and former players included in the report and how those players would be reprimanded, or if they could be. He also discussed the future of player compensation.
“I think this is an opportunity for the NCAA and member institutions to have a constructive dialogue about whether these rules make sense,” Bilas said. “I don’t think most people understand this, but for these rules not to be crimes, there’s no need to change federal law; the only change should be to the NCAA rules. This is an issue of noncompliance with NCAA rules.”
Bilas went on to say that this is not just a basketball issue, but a problem in sports in general, while also mentioning his skepticism of the NCAA’s amateurism rules.
“College sports can’t pretend it’s not about money. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry that’s professional in every way,” Bilas said.
