The NBA kicked off the new year with a busy Thursday night full of clear results. Some teams took control early and never looked back. Others stayed close for a while but collapsed late in life. A few stars had big nights, but strong team play decided most matches. Here’s a simple overview of what happened on January 1, 2026.

Winners: Houston Rockets

Houston dominated from the first tip. The Rockets played fast, shared the ball and never let Brooklyn find rhythm. Kevin Durant led calmly with 22 points and a season-high 11 assists. Amen Thompson added energy with 23 points, attacking the rim all night. Alperen Sengun returned from injury and looked comfortable, scoring 20 points with efficient shooting. Houston made its first seven shots and opened the second half with a barrage of three. This sequence ended the match early. The victory also marked Houston’s first victory in Brooklyn in seven years.

Losers: Brooklyn Nets

Brooklyn struggled from the start and never held the lead. Cam Thomas scored 21 points, but the support was limited. Injuries have left the Nets shorthanded and disorganized. Their defense collapsed early, allowing Houston to score easily. Once the Rockets got back on fire after halftime, any hope of a comeback was gone. This was Brooklyn’s first home loss to Houston since 2018.

Winners: Miami Heat

Miami relied on discipline and quick scoring. Norman Powell led the way with 36 points and remained calm late. Bam Adebayo controlled the paint with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Miami dominated the boards from the start and opened the third quarter with a strong run that allowed them to take a big lead. That cushion proved crucial when Detroit made a late push.

Losers: Detroit Pistons

Detroit showed courage but started too slowly. Cade Cunningham almost made his comeback with 31 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. Poor three-point shooting hurt them early and they failed to control the offensive glass. Late turnovers ended their rally.

Philadelphia 76ers against Dallas Mavericks (123-108)

Winners: Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia played one of its best road games this season. Tyrese Maxey played with 34 points and 10 assists. Joel Embiid added 22 and kept the offense steady. Rookie VJ Edgecombe impressed again with 23 points. The Sixers shot efficiently and took over once Dallas cooled down.

Losers: Dallas Mavericks

Dallas started hot but quickly faded. Anthony Davis returned but looked rusty. The shots dropped sharply after the first quarter and the offense stalled. This defeat marks Dallas’ fourth consecutive defeat.

Boston Celtics vs. Sacramento Kings (120-106)

Winners: Boston Celtics

Boston remained patient and finished strong. Jaylen Brown scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Derrick White hit a key three-pointer late and controlled the tempo. Bench contributions from Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser helped seal the victory. A late run put the game away.

Losers: Sacramento Kings

Sacramento competed early and stayed close until the fourth quarter. DeMar DeRozan led with 25 points. Late defensive breakdowns hurt them again. The loss continued a difficult period for the Kings.

Los Angeles Clippers against Utah Jazz (118-101)

Winners: Los Angeles Clippers

Kawhi Leonard took over when the game got tighter. He finished with 45 points and completely dominated the fourth quarter. James Harden provided steady support and the Clippers pulled away with a barrage of threes. This victory marked their sixth consecutive victory.

Losers: Utah Jazz

Utah fought hard but lacked firepower late. Playing without several key players hurt their depth. They couldn’t stop the Clippers’ shooting in the fourth quarter, which decided the game.

Final Conclusion

The first night of 2026 showed a clear trend. Teams that started quickly and stayed calm late came out on top. Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Boston and the Clippers set the tone. The losing teams showed effort, but execution was the difference.
