‘It’s more than my salary’ – Cameron Brink says she couldn’t afford her $7,000 private chef under WNBA contract

Cameron Brink entered the WNBA as one of the biggest college stars, averaging 17.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.7 blocks on 51.1 percent shooting during his senior year at Stanford, having already won an NCAA championship.

However, after fulfilling her childhood dream of being drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks with the second overall pick in 2024, she was quickly hit by the harsh reality of professional women’s sports. The conversation around WNBA players not being paid enough is well-known, and Brink has experienced it firsthand.

“I had a boss. Do you want to know how much she charged me for a month? Seven thousand dollars,” Edge said with laughs on his Straight To Cam podcast. “Absurd. For two people, for Benjamin and me. Not even for three meals. I say to myself, it’s a threat to me, my contract is $70,000, we can’t do that, it’s more than my salary!”

Brink’s net worth is estimated to be around $2 million

Brink was already one of the highest-paid college athletes through NIL deals, earning more than $200,000 representing more than 20 brands, according to On3. In 2023, she signed an NIL deal with Chegg to support student mental health, inspired by her own struggles with anxiety. Later that year, Brink became the first female basketball player to sign with New Balance and also signed deals with Urban Outfitters and Netflix.

Upon joining the WNBA, she signed a four-year contract worth around $340,000, earning just under $160,000 thus far in her career. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated to be around $2 million in 2025.

From an outside perspective, Brink’s stance on firing his boss may seem selfish. But as a professional athlete, she aims to maximize her talent by investing in her body, whether through personal training or, in this case, nutrition, which is difficult to maintain at current WNBA salary levels.

Brink highlighted the broader issue of salary disparity in American basketball between the men’s and women’s leagues.

“There’s so much, and it’s such a complex issue, but I would just say to the fans and the people who support us, please continue that support and let us know that we are valuable in what we’re asking for,” She said “ESPN.”

WNBA salaries are on the rise

This financial reality even led Brink to join Breeze BC, which competes in a three-on-three women’s basketball league, Unrivaled, that reportedly pays its players significantly more than the WNBA. The 6’4” forward reportedly earns around six figures, significantly higher than her WNBA salary.

Brink also comes from a wealthy family and is closely related to the Curry family. Despite her wealth, she chose to stay grounded, avoiding the expense of a personal chef by subscribing to a meal delivery service.

Even though WNBA salaries are on the rise thanks to new deals that will increase both mid- and upper-middle salaries, there is still progress to be made before these changes are fully realized.
