Inigo Martinez sings silently for Barcelona from day one of the season and is one of the team’s most underrated stars under Hansi Flick.
The player has been one of the best defenders in La Liga this season and even recently spoke about his dream of joining the Spanish national team as part of their recent resurgence.
The moment he was waiting for suddenly no longer seems very far away.
A window of opportunity
Luis de la Fuente called the likes of Pedri, Marc Casado and Dani Olmo will join the national team during the ongoing international break.
Pau Cubarsi could not be recalled due to injury, while Lamine Yamal did not travel despite being named to the squad due to a fitness issue.
NOW, AS reveals that La Roja defender Pau Torres is injured and will not travel with de la Fuente’s team for the upcoming friendlies.
The coach is therefore considering calling on Inigo Martinez as a replacement given the player’s form, and rightly so.
It remains to be seen who the coach will ultimately opt for, but the veteran Basque defender is the favorite and official confirmation can be expected soon.
If called up, Martinez will have the chance to play for Spain against Denmark and Switzerland in the coming weeks.
Martinez made his debut for Spain in 2013 and has made 21 appearances for his country, scoring one goal in the process. He last started for Spain against Georgia a year ago, notably in the same match where Gavi injured his ACL.
