As Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane remains a hot topic in the fraternity after another disappointing trophyless season for the club, an experienced South African football coach has offered his advice.
As Amakhosi finished the 2022/23 season in 5th place in the DStv Premiership table, Zwane led the Soweto giants to 11 league defeats, marking a record number of defeats for the club in a single season since the start of the PSL era in 1996.

Zwane, however, to his credit, managed to score a league double against eternal rivals Orlando Pirates to bring smiles to the multitudes of the team’s supporters, while also writing his name in the history books by achieving this feat.
There have been varying opinions from pundits and fans alike on whether Zwane is still fit to continue at the helm as Chiefs coach for the 2023/24 season, but the four-time manager League winner Gordon Igesund believes he should be retained even though he and his technical team may need the assistance of an experienced coach in an advisory role.
“You know what, now you’re asking me a question that I don’t just want to talk about. You know, I don’t just want to talk about the coaches about what they did and what they didn’t do. I really like Zwane. He’s a very young coach, he’s still growing and he still has to learn. He’s got a lot of young players there that he’s helping develop,” Igesund said.

“But I can’t comment on how he coped.” I don’t think he had a good season, but I don’t think he had a bad season. He is still a young coach who needs to know how to handle certain situations and he will learn them. You must remember that there is no substitute for experience. He has good commitment and understanding of the game, but he still has a lot of work to do. So I say he needs to be supported. Maybe what the bosses should really do is find someone very experienced to mentor these guys. There are many coaches who can offer this role. Ultimately, all they have to do is get their act together now and prepare for the new season,” added the experienced mentor.
