How did UNC’s post players perform in a closer-than-expected win against Elon?

Without Armando Bacot In the North Carolina Tar Heels uniform, UNC is in dire need of players to step up at the position this season.

Fortunately for North Carolina, lots of messages guys to alternate with – and all are experienced upper-class men.

Jalen Washington, who started at center in UNC’s 90-76 win over Elon, is a junior. Jae’Lyn Witherswho started as a power forward, is in his fifth season. Ven-Allen Lubin, the Vanderbilt transfer who came off the bench and can play both the four and the five, is a junior. Cade Tysonthe sharp-shooting Belmont transfer, considered a Stretch Four, is a junior.

I’m really encouraged by what I saw in the Tar Heels’ position rotation Monday night, especially from Withers and Washington. Withers had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Washington scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds, blocked a shot, stole a ball and recorded an assist.

Lubin scored four points, recorded seven rebounds and blocked two shots in 17 minutes off the bench, while Tyson scored two points – and grabbed two rebounds – in 16 minutes off the bench.

The North Carolina troika of Jalen Washington, Jae’Lyn Withers and Van-Allen Lubin combined for 22 points and 21 rebounds in Monday’s opener against Elon. Hubert Davis would sign 3/4 of them every night after Armando Bacot. Kansas awaits Friday.

– Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) November 5, 2024

Look at the second sentence of what respected college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein said: Hubert Davis would sign on Monday night for 3/4 of North Carolina post-production, especially in a post-Bacot world.

I agree with Rothstein. There are bound to be some growing pains for UNC in the paint during the college basketball season, but at least it has upperclassmen in Lubin, Withers and Washington to rely on for production.
