Join us on Wednesday, March 22 and celebrate the strength and resilience of our community. The evening will feature a keynote speaker and presentations from scholarship and award winners.
Diana Matheson, two-time Olympic bronze medalist and former professional soccer player, will speak at UofG’s annual HeForShe gender equality event.
Matheson, perhaps best known for scoring the winning goal in the bronze medal match at the 2012 London Olympics, is also the co-founder of Project 8, an initiative to help launch the first soccer league female professional in Canada. During her keynote address, Matheson will discuss the gender equity challenges female athletes face in professional sports. A hot topic as the Canadian women’s soccer team is currently protesting its salary compared to that of the men’s national team.
Hosted by the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics (Lang), the School of Engineering and Gryphon Football at the University of Georgia, the annual HeForShe event also includes a Community Impact Award, which recognizes a local business’s efforts to improve gender equality, as well as providing scholarships for students to recognize their leadership.
Doors open for the event at 6:30 p.m., which officially begins at 7:00 p.m. Learn more about the event here.
About the HeForShe initiative
HeForShe is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of gender equality, initiated by the UN. Its goal is to achieve equality by encouraging all genders to participate as agents of change and take action against stereotypes and negative behaviors. Grounded in the idea that gender inequality is a problem that affects everyone – socially, economically and politically – it seeks to actively involve men and boys in a movement initially conceived as “a fight for women by women.
