October 4 – MATTOON – Batman and Robin.
The Effingham boys golf team has a carbon copy in senior Max Seachrist and sophomore Jude Traub. The two showed it Wednesday at the Class 2A Mattoon Regional at Meadowview Golf Course.
Seachrist and Traub tied after 18 holes and decided the winner on the first playoff hole, with Seachrist winning. Both ended up shooting 70-under par.
“My biggest thing today was my mental game, just trying to play every shot and not worry about the big picture,” Seachrist said. “I felt like I did a good job with that today.”
“The other day it was Leo (Wyckoff) and Cannon (Bockhorn); they stood up and played their two best rounds ever and when our two main guys are third and fourth and played well, it is phenomenal, but they showed up today and led us like they’re supposed to,” added head coach Jeff Schafer. “Max made it work very early and Jude just played really solid and had a really good finish.
“I always say I got one of the best 1-2 combinations to ever give us a chance to win a tournament.”
Seachrist shot two under par on the front nine. He was four under heading into the 13th hole. He pared two holes in a row before a bogey at the par-5 15th, a par at the par-4 16th, a bogey at the par-3 17th and a par at the par-4 18th.
Traub was tied for the top nine. He birdied the par-4 12th hole before a bogey at the par-4 14th, an eagle at the 15th, a bogey at the 16th and a par and a birdie at the 17th and 18th holes.
The team ended up shooting a 308.
“I’m really proud of them. We’ve really played solid all year,” Schafer said. “We have had good results in all the tournaments we have participated in.”
Wyckoff finished ninth individually with an 81 and Bockhorn shot an 87.
“He played really well all year,” Schafer said of Wyckoff. “He won a few nine-hole matches and was weak once for us in an 18-hole match. He’s right on his heels and we definitely need to make a big move next year to replace Max. “
The scores that didn’t count were 89s from Rayden Schneider and Brody Boehm.
Charleston finished second with a 321 and Mattoon third with a 326. Altamont finished 10th with a 398.
Hayden Summers was 28th with a 92. Tyler Ruffner was 45th with a 100, Joel Bauer was 48th with a 102, Evan Elam was 52nd with a 104, Alex Walker was 54th with a 107 and Charlie Goeckner was 58th with a 117.
