Gunmen opened fire on a soccer field in central Mexico, killing at least 11 people and wounding 12 others, authorities said.
Salamanca Mayor César Prieto said in a statement posted on social media that the gunmen arrived at the end of a soccer match on Sunday local time.
Ten people died at the scene and one later died in hospital.
The mayor said a woman and a child were among the injured.
Mr Prieto said the attack was part of a “crime wave” in the city and called on President Claudia Sheinbaum to help control the violence.
The Guanajuato state attorney’s office said it was investigating and coordinating with federal authorities to increase security in the region.
Guanajuato recorded Mexico’s highest homicide total last year.
“Unfortunately, there are criminal groups that are trying to subdue the authorities, which they will not succeed in,” the mayor said.
Overall, the Mexican government says the country’s murder rate in 2025 was the lowest since 2016, at 17.5 murders per 100,000 people, although analysts have warned that those figures may not fully reflect the country’s violence.
