While many players dispersed for rest and relaxation during the Olympic vacation, Matvei Gridin took a different route.

Instead of a beach getaway, the Calgary Flames rookie headed to Rockford, Illinois to compete in the 2026 AHL All-Star Challenge – a reward for a strong first half with the Calgary Wranglers and another step forward in his development.

It may not have been a traditional vacation, but it was an opportunity that Gridin seized. Named an AHL All-Star for his performance this season, the 19-year-old was a key contributor for the Wranglers, recording 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 34 games.

Competing alongside some of the best talent in the league was an experience he didn’t take for granted.

“They are the best players on their team” Gridin told Wranglers media after the game. “It’s nice to play with talented guys.”

Gridin had two assists in his first game, his All-Star nod capping what has been a steady rise in his first full professional campaign. His progress isn’t limited to the AHL, either.

The Russian forward played 13 games for the Flames this season, scoring three goals and three assists for six points. He entered the break on a good note, recording his first career NHL multi-point performance with a goal and an assist against the Edmonton Oilers.

That momentum is something he hopes to continue as part of the stretch of road.

“Big second half of the season,” Gridin said. “I just try to do my best and play the way I can play.”

Before the NHL Olympic break, Gridin was reassigned to the Wranglers to ensure he continues to receive significant ice time and continue its development. The plan reflects Calgary’s long-term vision: to give one of its promising young forwards every chance to develop his game.

With confidence building at the AHL and NHL levels, Gridin’s All-Star participation is less about a mid-season showcase and more about a player trending in the right direction as the Flames prepare for the final push of the season.
