Rudy Gobert was recently voted most overrated player in the NBA in The Athetlic’s anonymous player poll. Suns guard Grayson Allen thinks whoever voted Gobert overrated doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Here’s what Allen said about a Minnesota defense that held the Suns under 100 points in Games 1 and 2 of the best-of-seven playoff series against Gobert and the Wolves.
“You have to give them a lot of credit and what they do defensively. They have a great defensive team and they’ve shown it all season,” Allen said, then questioning people who claim Gobert is overrated.
“I don’t know who voted Rudy as an overrated player, but he really anchors their defense and makes things difficult. He frees up a lot for them. They’re good defensively. Just play with their disruption, their physicality and l “Aggression with which they play with the ball, intelligent attacks on Rudy and you just have to be really balanced with the ball, otherwise they can knock you out of shape,” Allen said.
The Athletic surveyed 142 NBA players asking them several different questions, including who is the most overrated player in the league. Of the 81 players who responded, the majority voted for Gobert.
Minnesota has dominated the Suns and leads the series 2-0 heading into Game 3 Friday at 9:30 p.m. CT in Phoenix. The Suns hope to get Allen, who led the NBA in 3-point shooting during the regular season, but he is questionable after re-injury in Game 2 following a sprained right ankle he suffered in of the first match.
“It feels good, better than I thought it would,” Allen said of his ankle Thursday. “Stepping on someone’s toe two games in a row is bad luck.”
Allen did some light work and ran on an underwater treadmill Thursday. He hopes another day of rest will allow him to play the third game. Without him, the Suns could be in trouble against the Timberwolves’ stingy defense.
