(Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae) ○…Resurrected golf emperor Tiger Woods (USA) has been selected as a candidate for the 2021 Hall of Fame.
The World Golf Hall of Fame announced 10 candidates for induction on the 4th (Korean time), including Woods, Padraig Harrington (Ireland), Johnny Farrell, Tom Weiskopf, Dottie Pepper, Suzy Maxwell, Beverly Hanson, Sandra Palmer, Tim Finchem and Marion Hollins (all USA). Originally, you had to be 50 to join, but last January the minimum age was lowered to 45 from 2021. At the time, this was interpreted as a measure “for Woods, who is 45”.
For male players to become candidates, they must have at least 15 wins on major circuits or at least 2 wins in all four majors and the Players Championship. Woods has met the basic requirements by winning 15 major victories on the PGA Tour. In April last year, he demonstrated his resilience by winning a major at the Masters for the first time in 11 years since the 2008 US Open. In October, he reached the all-time record of 82 victories, equaling Sam Snead (USA), by winning the Zozo Championship.
Harrington is a player who has 15 European Tour victories and 3 major victories. Pepper has won 17 times on the LPGA Tour, including 2 majors. Finchem was recognized for his contributions to the development of the PGA Tour as commissioner from 1994 to 2016. To be confirmed for induction into the Hall of Fame, a nominee must receive at least 75 percent approval, or 15 votes out of 20, from the selection committee. The finalists inducted, as well as the date and location of the ceremony, will be announced at a later date.
