(Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae) ○…The HSBC Champions Series of the World Golf Championships (WGC) has been canceled.
The PGA Tour, which organizes the tournament, announced on the 7th (Korean time) that “due to China’s enhanced prevention measures against COVID-19, the tournament cannot take place.” For the third year in a row, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 situation, following 2020 and last year. This year, the event was scheduled to take place over four days starting October 27 in Shanghai, China. Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), 2019 champion, postponed the defense of his title for a year.
With the HSBC Champions not taking place, the Bermuda Championship, held at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda, during the same period, will once again be transformed into a 500 FedEx Cup points event. The Bermuda Championship is a “B-tier match” held for lower ranked players who do not qualify for the HSBC Champions. Originally, only 300 FedEx Cup points were awarded. This year, the total prize money was increased to $6.5 million.
