Marcus Thuram put in a virtuoso display for Inter Milan against Juventus yesterday, but Lautaro Martinez failed to make much of an impact.
This is the verdict published today in the printed edition of the Milanese newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They contrast the performances of the two starting attackers of the Nerazzurri.
For a game that featured a stunning eight goals, yesterday’s Derby d’Italia wasn’t exactly a night for the strikers.
Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic scored his team’s first goal.
But apart from that, the Nerazzurri and Bianconeri have found other sources of goals.
For Inter, for example, midfielder Piotr Zielinski scored his first two goals in the Nerazzurri jersey, both from the penalty spot.
But even though Inter’s attackers didn’t get on the scoresheet, at least one of them made a huge impact.
Marcus Thuram shines in Inter Vs Juventus thriller – Lautaro disappointing
French international striker Marcus Thuram has undoubtedly played a crucial role in everything Inter have done, even if he didn’t score a goal.
The 27-year-old won Inter’s first penalties.
Thuram’s move troubled the Juventus defense all night. In particular, Bianconeri captain Danilo struggled to contain his pace and timing of his runs in behind.
And when Thuram met a cross from Denzel Dumfries into the box, Danilo clumsily pulled him to the ground to give Inter their first penalty of the match.
Beyond this contribution, Thuram was an offensive spark for Inter the entire time he was on the pitch.
It was confusing to see Simone Inzaghi take out the Frenchman in the second half. But that could have been because Thuram simply gave it his all.
The striker who remained on the pitch when Thuram left was Inter captain Lautaro Martinez.
But it was not the Argentinian’s evening.
There may have been a moment or two of intense bonding play between Martinez.
But the Derby d’Italia does not tend to be a favorable meeting for Martinez. And the captain once again lacked not only a goal, but also a sense of threat in the Bianconeri penalty area.
Even against a creaking Juventus backline, Martinez was unable to score.
