Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of Australia’s upcoming World Cup match against England due to a golf cart accident that reportedly left him with a concussion.
It is reported that the Australian all-rounder slipped and fell from the back of a golf cart, colliding with his head.
The setback comes shortly after Maxwell, 35, recovered from another freak injury; he returned to action ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after breaking his leg at a 50th birthday party.
Before the World Cup, Australia had only recently returned to a full complement of fit players; Travis Head, who broke his hand during an ODI before the tournament, scored a century in his first match against India.
This is not the first freak golf accident to affect a cricketer in recent memory; Jonny Bairstow fractured his leg while slipping and playing golf in 2022/23, ruling him out of the England winter squad.
Maxwell’s absence will likely mean a return to the team for either Marcus Stoinis or Cam Green, the team’s two versatile players who are currently not in the XI.
Australia are set to secure their passage to the World Cup semi-finals, while beating England would officially eliminate their old rivals.
