This week kicked off the playoffs for Wooster area high school golf teams, as sectionals give a chance to teams and individuals looking to punch that district ticket to continue their season.

Golf for boys

Div. II Northeast Sectional

Monday at The Elms, Waynedale advanced with a second-place team finish. With a team score of 321, the Golden Bears were just shy of South Range, which earned a 306, and ahead of West Branch (322) as all three teams advanced to next week’s district tournament at Windmill Lakes.

Waynedale was led by Jordan Miller and Hank Miller, who were five shots behind the medalist with a 79. Logan Troyer shot an 81 and Brayden Schlabach shot an 82.

“It was just a case of the team coming together and helping each other, it was classic team golf,” Golden Bears coach Melinda Budd said.

Orrville (349) was sixth, Tuslaw (353) seventh, Triway (418) 12th and Northwestern (443) 14th.

Div. III Northeast Sectional

In a section that was moved to Pleasant Valley Country Club due to rain, Smithville came in first with a score of 334. Dalton finished fifth with 354, followed by Chippewa (360) and Hillsdale (361). Loudonville (418) dominated the locals with a 10th place.

The Smithies were led by Owen Ward, who shot a 77. No. 3 golfer Mason Shutt shot an 80, Gavin Von Almen had an 81 and Brennan Piatt finished with a 96 as Smithville qualified as a team for the districts of Tannenhauf Golf Club.

Individually, the Bulldogs were led by their district qualifier, Zach Brahler, who earned a 79. The Chipps were led by Anthony Kish (83) and Dylan Braswell (85), the Falcons were led by AJ Brown with an 87 and Judah Layton was leading the match. Redbirds with an 81.

Div. Sectional III East

Hiland finished second at Cambridge Country Club. The Hawks were seven shots behind section champion and rival Garaway.

Hiland was led by Jack Mast, who shot an even-par 72 and Andrew Beun finished four shots at 76. Camden Bille had a 78 and Jesse Conn had an 81.

Div. Sectional II East

At River Green Golf Club, West Holmes finished ninth with a score of 376. The four teams eliminated were John Glenn (303), Indian Valley (312), Meadowbrook (324) and Claymont (335). The Knights were led by Maverick Rickly with an 89 and Zane Kinsey shot a 91.

Div. I northeast sectional

Wooster will tee off for Sectionals on Tuesday, October 1 at Good Park Golf Course, with Aidan Cleveland first to tee off at 10:20 a.m.

Girls Golf

Div. II Northeast Sectional

Tuslaw progressed as a team and a trio of local girls extended their season by progressing individually. The Mustangs came in third with a team score of 413, behind Keystone (375) and East Canton (389).

Avery Rodocker and Emilee Urbas both shot 95s and Mollie Berbari had a 104. Hadley Porter rounded out the Mustangs’ scoring lineup with a 119.

Individually, Hillsdale’s Dally Meek finished second with a score of 83, one behind medalist Mia Steigerwald’s 82 for the Hornets. Kylie Hostettler of Norwegianne finished fourth with 89 and Madison Wade of Dalton shot 90 to advance.

Next up for the Tuslaws and the trio of locals is the district match at Good Park on Wednesday October 2.

Div. Sectional I East

Advancing to district play was Aubrey Burchfield of West Holmes, who shot a 92. As a team, the Knights finished eighth with a score of 482 at Cambridge Country Club. The three teams advancing were Dover (374), Minerva (392) and New Philadelphia (393).

Div. I northeast sectional

Wooster will play Monday, September 30 at Elms Country Club at 10:20 a.m. when Hailey Bode tees off.
