Friday, USC officially hired Gary Patterson as the new defensive coordinator. Legendary TCU head coach will take over Trojan horses‘ defense following D’Anton Lynn’s departure for Penn State.
While Patterson seems excited to get to work at USC, a rather unfortunate tweet of his recently surfaced. After USC’s Alamo Bowl loss to TCU — a school where he was the head coach for more than two decades — last month, Patterson took to social media to celebrate his former team.

“Great job fighting back, the frogs win!” » Patterson wrote.
Obviously, Patterson was not yet employed by USC at the time, so there was nothing wrong with him saying what he did. However, it’s a bit ironic to see the Trojans’ new defensive coordinator celebrating what was a rather unfortunate collapse for USC.
Ultimately, the best way for Patterson to rally around the Trojan family will be how USC’s defense performs on the field. Not allowing 35-yard touchdowns on screen passes on 3rd and 20 would be a great way to start.
