Indeed, the WNBA finds itself at a crossroads with the ongoing CBA negotiations. The players are on one side advocate for an equal share of income. Meanwhile, the league, led by Commissioner Cathy EngelbertEast propose a salary increasebut not enough revenue share.

For now, the negotiations remain very much alive. However, a former Miami Marlins executive, David Samson, is issue a warning to players, according to The Dan LeBatard Show. Essentially, if the players ask for too much, then the league could fold.

“What I’m telling you is if the players get too greedy, it will be the end of the WNBA,” he said. “And it’s not the end of the world for them because they have options.”

In addition, he also mentioned Caitlin Clark. He argued that female players were seeking to capitalize on the popularity she had gained amid the league’s increased visibility.

“They believe this is their moment because of all the great press around Caitlin Clark and the enthusiasm of the WNBA,” Samson said. “And I’m in no way disputing the right of players to make as much money as they can, because if you can go overseas, if you can go to Unrivaled, if you can make a living and it’s a better life, go for it.”

“I’d be very careful about being arrogant if I’m the WNBA Players Association. But finding the optionality is important and that’s what the women did. So I give them credit for that. But I tell you, the owners don’t care if the WNBA folds, they’ll be fine.”

The WNBA continues to grow in popularity and potential

Increases in television ratings, attendance, merchandise sales and other factors demonstrated renewed interest in the WNBA. At the same time, the expansion of the team will take place in the coming years.

Next year, the Toronto Tempo and Portland will begin their inaugural seasons. In 2028, Cleveland will begin its inaugural season and Detroit in 2029.

Finally, Philadelphia will launch in 2030.
