March 27 – Aberdeen, SD – The former male basketball coach of Dakota Wesleyan, Matt Wilber, will honor a new key line in 2025.
Wilber has been hired as the next male basketball coach of the Northern State University, announced the university on Thursday, becoming the 23rd head coach in the history of the program and only the seventh person since the 1945-46 season to direct the Wolves.
“It’s an emotional moment in a loop for me by growing up a fan of northern basketballs, looking at and applauding the wolves of Wachs Arena when he was a child,” Wilber said in a statement. “I am delighted to go to work right away and start to connect with the campus and Aberdeen communities, as well as our fans and former students.”

Before joining the Wolvers, Wilber led Dwu from 2013 to 2024, in 224-125 in 11 years. Under his mandate, the Tigers recorded six seasons of 20 victories and posted a finalist at the NAIA National Tournament in 2015, also winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference Coach’s Prize and the National Coach of the Year NAIA the same season.
Previously, he was a graduate assistant and deputy coach later for the male basketball program at Augustana University, where he played from 1997 to 2002. Wilber also made stops at the University of Sioux Falls and at the State University of South Dakota as an assistant.
Wilber also owned and carried out Tibbs Basketball alongside the former assistant coach of Sioux Falls and the current head coach of the Phoenix Mercury Nate Tibbetts of the WNBA, a basketball development program held in the Sioux Falls region, from 2006 to 2013. Wilber was most recently assistant coach under Tibbetts with Mercury in 2024.
Last season, the state of the North finished with a 2-26 file, including a 1-21 brand in the Northern Sun Intercollegate Conference Play.
