At first

The team was founded in 1993 and took its name from the endangered threat Florida Panther (Puma Concolor Couguar). Unlike most extension teams, the panthers were immediately competitive, in a qualification victory for the playoffs during each of their first two seasons. In 1995-1996, the team, led by the goalkeeper outside competitions John Vanbiesbrouck, obtained a place in the playoffs and disturbed two seeds superior to the Eastern Conference on the way to the Stanley Cup finals, in which they were swept by the Colorado Avalanche.
