Anyone who has read anything I have written or tweeted this season knows exactly who I think should be the No. 1 seed. The Houston Cougars are the best team in the country and after watching them play this year, it is pretty obvious that they have the best team. Houston has crushed their opponents and they have looked good doing it.
The Cougars are efficient on offense and relentless on defense. On top of all that, Houston has the best back line in the country. That’s my opinion of course, but for my money, the trio of Jamal Shead, Marcus Sasserand Tramon Mark are the three I would take into battle against anyone.
Houston is well coached by head coach Kelvin Sampson, they play extremely fast and crush other teams quickly. There aren’t many teams in the country that can play as fast as Houston on offense and play as slow as them on defense and do it successfully. In addition to the guards, both frontcourt options are offensive threats but are also great rebounders and shot blockers. They are great around the basket and make sure opponents have to defend every position on the court. Houston has a big game on the schedule today against Oregon, I don’t think Oregon is as good but this is the first major test for the Cougars.
Houston is currently ranked number 3 in the country and if they win today they will likely be number 2 as Gonzaga lost to Texas earlier this week. The Cougars are on a roll to the top spot as they are going to be right behind the North Carolina Tar Heels who have looked shaky at best. Houston is the only team this season that has taken care of the teams they were supposed to take.

They’ve taken down some lesser opponents and while they’ll be tested in the future, they have the assets to make a run at the national championship. It’s tough to go undefeated, but Houston has a team that can really get close. I picked them to win the national title and they probably won’t be out of the top five all year and will be the favorites in March.
