Audience #Flames bring veteran defenseman Tyson Barrie to training camp on a PTO.
A season after a 13-goal, 55-point campaign, he’s not the only surprising name to stick around this long.
He needs to earn a contract, but he could be a great addition to Calgary’s leadership.

Barrie had an impressive 13-goal, 55-point campaign in 2022-23, but struggled upon joining the team. Nashville Predators in 2023-24. His career NHL numbers are solid, but being passed over by the Preds has left NHL clubs unsure of what he can bring to a roster. There has been talk of Edmonton Oilers had also contacted a PTO.
With 109 goals and 396 assists in 809 regular-season games, Barrie believes he still has potential. He has averaged more than 21 minutes per game in recent seasons and is known for his offensive abilities, particularly on the power play. If he earns a spot on the Flames’ right side, he could be useful. At the very least, he could be a potential trade asset.
Barrie is looking for an opportunity to bounce back with the Flames. Hopefully his PTO could lead to a league minimum contract. In the meantime, his potential addition would not only bring offensive skills to the Flames’ roster, but also veteran leadership, something the Flames could benefit from as they navigate their current rebuild.
Barrie has already played for the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafsthe Edmonton Oilers and Predators. He is still free to sign with any team.
