“Do you think you can do it?” — Biden challenges Trump to golf match during heated debate.
In an unexpected twist during Thursday’s heated debate, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump engaged in a fiery exchange over their golf skills, a topic that sparked some of the night’s most fiery moments.
Amid discussions of the economy, immigration and foreign policy, the debate took a lighter turn when the subject of golf handicaps came up.
Trump, defending his physical fitness and mental alertness, boasted of his recent golfing exploits.
“I won two championships on one of my golf courses. To do that you have to be pretty smart and be able to hit the ball really far,” he said.
He then taunted Biden by saying: “Biden can’t hit a ball 50 yards.”
In response, Biden was quick to point out his own golfing prowess, pointing to his impressive handicap from his time as vice president.
“When I was vice president, I reduced my handicap to six,” Biden said, challenging Trump to a match where the former president would have to carry his own clubs.
“Do you think you can do it?” he asked.
The exchange grew more heated when Trump dismissed Biden’s claims about his golf handicap as “the biggest lie of all,” directly criticizing Biden’s golf swing.
Trying to steer the conversation back to more serious topics, Trump said, “Let’s not act like children,” to which Biden snapped, “You’re a child.”
The exchanges over golf handicaps underscored the continuing scrutiny both candidates face regarding their physical and mental fitness for the presidency.
In golf terms, a handicap represents a player’s potential ability, with a lower handicap indicating a better player.
