The Munich Arena will shine in rainbow colors during the European Football Championship on June 22 and 23. This event will take place on Christopher Street Day in the Bavarian capital, as EM organizers confirmed to the dpa news agency. There may be a European Championship match these two days Munich however, this does not happen.
FC Bayern’s stadium lighting was the subject of major debate three years ago during the 2021 European Championship. The European Football Union (UEFA) rejected the city’s request for the stadium to be lit in rainbow colors for the team’s return match against Hungary. The context of the request was a protest against a law passed at the time in Hungary which limited young people’s right to information about homosexuality and transgenderism.
UEFA defined its resolution by saying that the request has a political context and is addressed to Hungarian staff and supporters. The rainbow flag is the flag of the LGBTQI* (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex) community and a symbol of broadness, tolerance and sexual self-determination.
Six matches will be played in Munich during this European tournament, including the opening match between Germany and Scotland on Friday. There will be three additional group matches on June 17, 20 and 25 in addition to the round of 16 (July 2) and the semi-final (July 9). The DFB selection will play against Hungary on June 19 in Stuttgart.
