A new ESPN rankings list The 100 Best College Football Quarterbacks of the 2000s have been released, and let’s just say it’s… interesting. ESPN editor Bill Connelly made the list and a Husker quarterback made the cut.
Former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch was listed at No. 52, just ahead of No. 53 Brady Quinn (Notre Dame) and behind No. 51 Byron Leftwich (Marshall).

Crouch played at Nebraska from 1997 to 2001. In 43 games, he rushed for 3,434 yards and 59 touchdowns while throwing for 4,481 yards and 29 touchdowns with 25 interceptions.
The Nebraska native also won the 2001 Heisman Trophy against that of Florida Rex Grossman, Ken Dorsey of Miami and that of Oregon Joey Harrington. That season, he rushed for 1,115 yards and 18 touchdowns while throwing for 1,510 yards, seven touchdowns and ten interceptions.
Connelly defended Nebraska’s last Heisman winner on the roster.
Nebraska’s last great QB option, Crouch, hasn’t produced the stats we’re used to seeing from Heisman winners. But he was a scary man, very scary, with the ball in his hands. Just ask Missouri.
While other running quarterbacks are ranked higher, Crouch is the highest ranked quarterback option. With modern offenses and current trends in the sport, it’s unlikely we’ll see a quarterback with his numbers win the Heisman or play in this style of offense again.
