Basketball fans breathed a sigh of relief Thursday as ESPN changed its NBA scoring format after a month of complaints.
Fans who checked box scores early in the season were subjected to a life-altering experience as ESPN changed the order of statistics in their scores this season without any warning. People hated it and talked about it.
The complaints finally came to a head earlier this week when ESPN’s Tim Legler literally screamed about the score changes during a podcast appearance.

“Thank you! Thank you! That’s the problem. I can’t stand it. Why did they do that? Why do I have to go through the whole page to see what the guys shot from the field? Why? I’m telling you, the score was perfect the way it was. Regardless, I’m going to talk to my people about it. It’s ESPN. I’m going to talk to them about it and see if I can get this thing back to what it was. And I bet you 90% of the people agree with us.
Two days later the box scores were changed again, although it’s hard to remember if that’s how they’ve always been or if there are still different changes like some people argue on Reddit.
One of the biggest theories surrounding this change is that ESPN was placing counting stats like points, rebounds and assists on the left so it would be easier to track players’ props. If it’s true, ESPN’s relationship with the game continues to make things worse for everyone.
