Canadian superproducer Murda Beatz is the first of three artists collaborating with ESPN This NHL playoff season.
The sports channel tapped Murda and producer Foster to remix the theme song for “NHL on ESPN.” His version gives the iconic theme song a trap beat and bass boost, and also includes his iconic slogan.
“I’ve been a fan of hockey and the Leafs for a long time, ever since I was growing up in Canada,” Murda Beatz told Complex Canada. “The ‘NHL on ESPN’ theme is a classic in the world of hockey, and when I was asked to put my touch on it, it took me back to that era and it was a no-brainer for me to do it.
The collaboration comes as ESPN celebrates the first NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on the network since 2004. While the Murda Beatz remix debuted during the first round of the playoffs, the alternative group Wave of joyThe remix of will premiere in the second round, featuring the EDM duo Zed is dead bring a remix to the conference finale.
“The theme song for ‘NHL on ESPN’ is one of those songs that has become synonymous with our hockey coverage over the years, so we knew we wanted to celebrate the return of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to ESPN with a unique element to it,” said Lucas Ferraro, director of sports marketing at ESPN. “All the artists did a phenomenal job modernizing the track for today’s fans while infusing it with the classic elements we all know and love.”
