Rarely one to filter his real feelings on a golf subject, Rory McILroy was criticized for his comments according to which something would have been radically badly if he had to play the golf of the Champions tour.
McILroy, 35, is currently playing in the players’ championship at TPC Sawgrass in the United States PGA Tourwhere he is four shots before the final round on Sunday.
The current world number two has four majors in its name, with only the title of the masters eluding it so far. This means that it is a victory in Augusta to become the sixth person to win the four male majors after Tiger woodJack Nicklaus, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan and Gary player.
At 21 in 2011, McILroy led the Masters Going backwards new before a bad swing comes to take his start to left on the 10th hole, which reported the end of his challenge in the only major he has not yet won.
Rory McILroy’s position on the Champions tour: “Something has turned terribly if I participate at 50”
McILroy was recalled this during a mockery of a spectator during a training session for players earlier this week, and may have led to his bad mood during the speech of the champion.
When he was asked if he planned to play on the senior tour in the United States, McILroy said: “Absolutely not. I will not play the champion’s golf. Listen, I said a lot of absolute in my time that I went back, but I can’t imagine playing Golf Champions Tour. Something went terribly badly if I have to compete in the golf at 50.”
In the meantime, Ernie ElsWho currently directs the order of the Merit of the Champions Tour – Charles Schwab Cup Money – and who is also a major quadruple winner like McILroy, suggested that the Northern Irish could feel differently when he is wiser.
“Interesting to read the comments of @ mciloryry today. At 35, I was also saying things saying not to play after 50 years. I am 55 years old now and I laughed at my comments from the time. @Champions Voter Golf is so fulfilling with a large group of players. We all grew up together from Junior Golf. Our sponsors and partners are a good tool. powerful!” Els said on X.
